Playing it safe means doing the same things over and over again in your holiday rental business.

It means not trying anything new because you keep telling yourself:

  • you’re not techie enough
  • you don’t have time
  • it might not work!

Mmm it’s very easy to put objections in our way isn’t it?

But just think how playing safe can also keep you stuck. How it can stop you building the business you dream of. How it can hold you back from reaching your potential.

What if …

… that new thing you wanted to introduce into your business, such as Instagram, doesn’t turn out to be as techie as you first thought. What if in fact you enjoy using Instagram and start to get in front of more potential guests as a result.

…. you started to work smarter instead of harder, introduced systems to schedule your social media, creating extra hours in your working week as a result.

… that new idea of yours, like offering your guests a discount voucher for the local pub, does work!!

It brings to mind this famous quote by Erin Hanson:

“What If I Fall, Oh My Darling, What If You Fly”

I see holiday home owners staying safe when:

You stick with the big listing sites

Despite the financial hit of paying their fees and your frustration by their constant rule changes and the control they take away from your business you play it safe. Imagine instead life without them and start working towards that goal.

You don’t try anything new in your marketing

You’ve heard of blogging, e-newsletters and Facebook Lives and you even know the benefits they can bring to your business, but life’s easier not to have to get to grips with them and to just stick to posting in Facebook and sending the odd Tweet.

You don’t invest in you as a business owner

Your business is you; you grow, you develop and your business will too.

This investment can be in time, researching online and picking up new hints and tips. Or a financial investment to buy that class or program that will give you the solution to that problem you have right now. That will fast-track you and get you moving forward.

You procrastinate

That job that’s on your to-do list this week, gets overlooked and moved to next week’s list and then the week’s after. You know that task I’m talking about.
The task that you want to disappear from your list, the task that doesn’t light the fire in your belly. Yet the task that you know will make a difference in your business and needs tackling. That’s why it’s so much easier to put it off until next week!

So no more playing it safe, no more telling yourself stories that your idea of trying something new will fail. How do you know until you try!  Be brave and go for it.
